Traffic Accidents In Pondicherry University

Road accidents have become a common thing in
our contemporary Indian society. It is so common that 'minor' accidents do not even get noticed. The value for life as it is,is on a a decline. But one's own life is the most important thing one would care for.Through this blog,i try to give a brief outlook on the road accidents in Pondicherry university.

There are many accidents in Pondicherry university(PU) that goes unnoticed and even if noticed it fades away sometime later without introspecting into the matter so as to mitigate or prevent further accidents.

like any particular accidents the major cause for road accidents in PU,is born out of negligence of the driver.Fast driving with careless guidance of the vehicle makes up for the majority of the smaller accidents in PU.People usually end up with some small cuts and bruises but without any major injuries. The majority of the vehicles in PU are owned by students and is of two wheelers. There are only rare cases students using four wheelers.most of the four wheelers are owned by either faculy or staff members.

Accidents can result in various injuries. The consequences of road accidents are alarming in its nature. This is most true when the person involved is a student. In PU we have a credit base system for education and the semesters have an even and odd semester pattern.Missing a term would seriously affect the students academic life. I have met up with people who had to miss important classes due to the various road accidents inside campus and while travelling outside.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

Arul(name changed) is a student in PU currently a student in the earth sciences department. He was fun loving person and had warm relationships with everyone. He was travelling from Pondicherry town  to Kalapet(where PU)is situated. It was late at night and he was travelling with his friend on a bike.On the way he met with an accident and his foot got crushed.Later he was appointed to MIOT hospital in chennai. He had to undergo major operations there.By the time his operations finished Chennai was hit by floods the previous year, but fortune favoured him to move to a safe location in time.He is still recovering and has not yet returned to his academics(nearly a gap of five months, from November 2015-march 2015) and have missed two semesters in return.

Anjaly(here too the name is changed) is a MSc statistics student from (PU)she was going via the mother Theresa mess road by a cycle. It is said that a bike rider having to avoid a bus coming towards him suddenly changed the bikes course and Anjaly was not in his area of vision at the time. The two met with an accident.Currently Anjaly is in her hometown  taking rest, having to undergo multiple stitches to her  head and small plastic surgery and she too has lost much of her valuable classes and had to experience a lot of pain.

Another incident is the death of a MCA student from PU.He was travelling from Chennai to Pondicherry in a two wheeler and met with an accident and lost his life.

 ESTIMATING AN APPROXIMATE VEHICLE POPULATION

I tried to physically count and estimate the no: of vehicles of PU,which didn't go well at all.The traffic was beyond my expectations. But I would like  to share a bit about my attempt though.I tried to estimate the traffic through the second gate of PU on 3/3/2016. form 9:50 am to 10:22 am,nearly for half an hour.

Traffic through gate:2

Another attempt was done to get an approximate figure of the standing vehicle strength in departments, details of which is given below.(*data collected during forenoon session on 3/3/2016.)

The last attempt was done to estimate the the no:of vehicles at boys hostels and some other important locations during the noon time on 3/3/2016 and the data is given below
This data collection was done to give you a glimpse into the average vehicle population. The absolute figures can vary if more scientific way of analysis is used.but this can tell about the traffic in PU,and with it a  chance to compare it with universities in terms of vehicle population and traffic accidents. The situation has to be taken care with due care or else it would lead to more victims due sheer negligence which can be avoided if acted upon now.

REASONS FOR ACCIDENTS AND ITS SEVERITY

1,FAST AND RASH DRIVING

One of the main problems leading to road accidents in Pondicherry university is overspeed and rash driving. It is a common sight to see people in the university drive off at speeds far exceeding the safety limits.another reason would be changing the lanes in which the vehicle is supposed to travel. This has become the villain several times.

2,DRUNKEN DRIVING AND USE OF MOBILES

Even though alcohol is prevented in the campus, its not uncommon to find drunkards(alcohol is plentifully available in this union territory) driving away in two wheelers with no control in the university often during night times. The use of mobile phones during driving has contributed to the rise of road accidents in the university.

3,THE NATURE OF THE ROADS

The road usually is covered with sand and dust which makes the roads susceptible to slip and in some places the road is broken to form puddles.unwary drivers usually fall for these and end up in accidents.

4,LACK OF HELMETS

This is one of the most shocking thing that i have felt about driving in Pondicherry,Nobody wears a helmet!.It's a rare sight to see someone with proper helmet gears and most of the severity of the accidents is due to lack of helmet protection.

5,TAKING DOUBLES,TRIPLES AND  EVEN QUADRIPLES  IN BIKES

Its a common sight to see students in PU giving lift to friends. But with this also comes added danger and loss of balance for the vehicle as well as the rider.Taking triples is dangerous and four persons in one bike is just inviting accidents .It has to be kept in mind not to endanger one's own life along-with that of his/her friends life,be it that for joy or for saving time.

MEASUREMENTS TO REDUCE ACCIDENTS

1,The usage of helmets must definitely be encouraged. This will help to reduce the severity of the accidents.
2,Make sure to avoid triples or more when offering lift and if possible keep a check on it.
3.Make sure to tar the road well and keep it in good condition.
4,Keep a strict check for alcohol inside the university.
5,Strengthen the security system.
6,Conduct awareness classes within university.
7,If possible provide a mechanic shop within university like the cycle repair.
8,Provide ample medicine in the health center for the injured.
9,Establish traffic lights at critical junctions.
10,Provide ample lighting  during the night time, repair the broken lights.
